Bhutan Climate and Season

Climate and Season:

The most popular periods for trekking in Bhutan are spring and autumn. However, with climate change the seasonal change is unpredictable.  Depending on the altitude, the climate varies from semi-tropical to alpine (For every 1,000 m height increase the temperature drops about 7 degrees Celsius). In Southern Bhutan, the climate is tropical in the monsoon season and may range from 15 degrees Celsius in winter to 30 degrees Celsius in summer. The East is also warmer than the West. The center Bhutan (Punakha, Wangdiphodrang, Monger, Tashigang and Lhuntshi) enjoys a sub-tropical climate with very cool winters while the northern parts of the country have harsh climate including snowfall two to three times every winter. Thimphu, Tangsa and Bhumthang valley have temperature ranges from - 2.5°C in January to 25°C in summer with a rainfall of 100mm. In the high mountain regions, the average temperature varies from 0°C in winter to10°C in summer, with an average of 350mm of rain.

Bhutan has four seasons:

  • Spring (March, April, and May): During spring, more rain/precipitation clears early in the morning, accompanied by the strong wind. when the sun shines it could be hot.
  • Summer (June, July, and August): During summer, warm with the rain during the day or several overcast days in a row. trekking in monsoon may be challenged in the Himalayas but for every flower bloom in the raindrop.
  • Autumn (September, October, and November): In autumn, some rain showers but not as summer. there will be clear views during this season.
  • Winter (December, January, and February): A very pleasant dry/sunny period with cold nights/warm days, more and less cloudless, good views and snow on the high passes, good seasons for low altitude trekking. However, it may be impossible to cross find pack animals willing to cross high passes due to conditions.

Summer and snowfall in winter,

  • Winter in Bhutan is from mid November until mid March, and at this time of the year climate is dry with day time temperature of 16-19 degree centigrade (with sunshine and clear skies) and nighttime temperature falling below zero.
