Trekking in Eastern Nepal, Kanchanjunga, Makalu base camp and Lumba Sumba trekking are one of the most isolated and exhilarating treks in Nepal. The trails passes through serene jungles and villages in the mid-hill and up to the sacred alpine landscape of the Makalu Arun Barun and Kanchanjunga National park. The most awaited lodge facilities are not available till now. So that this trek obviously would require a camping trek. If you are looking for a challenging adventure trek in the Himalayas, far away from the crowd route, then this trek is going to add incomparable Kanchanjunga, Makalu base camp and Lumba Sumba trekking.

Access to the Kanchenjunga base camp trek
The Kanchanjunga trek usually begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tapljung airstrip in the far east of Nepal or an alternative flight to Bhadrapur or Biratnagar (South-Eastern Nepal). In case the second option would have opted, long road drives about 215km through the pristine hill of Ilam (Nepal's first Tea garden) with viewing all around the spectacular sceneries of lowlands can be observed. You may stop over on the way to Taplejung for the night depending upon the time, or continue to drive towards Taplejung, which is the gateway of the Kanchanjunga trek.

The trail rises from 500m to 5000m and trekkers enjoy fascinating biodiversity, geography and cultural diversity along the way includes scenic villages surrounded by rural, terraced farmland and the unpopulated highlands surrounded by towering peaks.

Requirement of Kanchenjunga base camp trek and Makalu base camp trek
Kanchanjunga region is a restricted area, as per the current rules of the Nepal government for foreign tourist is mandatory to obtain a special trekking permit from the immigration office of Kathmandu. It is compulsory to have two people minimum to obtain the permit. If you are alone, we will put you on the roster as part of another group (but you will not have to trek with the group, although you will need to trek with our guide), or pay for an extra permit for a "ghost" trekker that exists on paper only.

The climate of the Kanchenjunga base camp region
The monsoon is almost everywhere in Nepal from about 10th June to the end of September,
However, eastern Nepal has an extended wet season caused by the early arrival and late departure of the monsoons. The most popular season is autumn (October-November) when the rains washed the skies and the weather views are superior, the spring (March-May) season is another popular season for trekkers, the hillsides are covered with blooming rhododendrons from 1500m to 3000m altitude with different varieties of rhododendrons. Similarly, most people are not keen to trek in the winter when the temperature is too cold for comfort at high elevation and snow can block high passes.
Temperatures of Kanchenjunga base camp region
The temperature range depends primarily on the season. Under the normal condition, the rate of temperature drop as altitude is added is generally 6.4ºC per 1000 feet (3.5ºF/1000fit). The landscape will affect temperature including the direction of the slope face (north-facing slopes receive less sunlight and therefore are generally cooler, amount of cover by plants that provide shade, and the presence of rivers and bodies of water also have a cooling effect. However, in terms of temperatures at 1200m to 2500m during the month of October / November is generally beautiful and sunny. It is mild to cool in the valleys during the night (minimum 12 / 15ºC) and during the day (maximum 25 / 26º). Above 3000m, the temperatures will be decreased. At 5000m, they range between -10º (night) and 12 / 13º (day time).
Spring season, during March/May at 1200m to 2500m, is mostly dry, mild to hot, and dusty, the hillsides are covered with blooming rhododendrons. The sky is clear in the morning and generally windy with occasional thundershowers in the afternoons. The temperature is about (minimum 15/20ºC) during the night and (maximum 28 / 32º) during the daytime. Above 3000m, the temperatures will be decreased. At 5000m, they range between -5º (night) and 15/ 16º (day time).
Winter, December to February the temperature dry with occasional showers, cold, freezing in high altitudes and snow risk at high passes.
