Upper Dolpo trek with attendance at the Crystal Mountain Festival (Ribo Drugta) takes place from (dates not declared) August 2025
The Yatri Trekking team is excited to announce the upcoming RiboDrugta festival, also known as the Sacred Shey-Crystal Mountain Festival, set to take place at SheyGompa in Upper Dolpo in August 2024. This significant event occurs every 12 years following the Tibetan lunar calendar, specifically during the year of the Dragon (Druklho). In the Buddhist calendar, this twelve-year cycle is associated with different animals, including the Mouse, Bull, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and Pig. Each year attracts its group of pilgrims, with notable examples being the BoudhanathStupa in the year of the Bird, Mt. Kailash in the year of the Horse, and the Crystal Mountain in the year of the Dragon. Interestingly, the Crystal Mountain, also known as Ribo Drugta, is often referred to as the younger sibling of Mt. Kailash.
The RiboDrugta festival is a sacred and spiritually auspicious ceremony that brings together the Dolpopas, who gather to bestow blessings upon each other and all the pilgrims in attendance. With each passing festive year, the event draws an increasing number of pilgrims due to the profound spiritual essence that permeates Upper Dolpo. The journey into Upper Dolpo is considered a revered and sacred experience, making it a destination of great significance for those seeking a deeper connection with their spirituality.
This upper Dolpo circuit is also the complete one, which consists of the entire Dolpo region including the passes Kangla (5500m) and Gela (5100m) and the 2nd biggest village of Dolpo: Saldang and Shey Gumba.
Dolpo region, which culturally and naturally resembles the Mustang region, lies on the direct route between Tibet and Nepal, where we cross the caravans of yaks carrying salt and wool from Tibet. It makes any trekkers feel the lifestyle of the mountainous region. It offers a highly adventurous journey where you get to feel the rhythm of chörtens, Buddhist prayer spots, and watch Blue Sheep, Snow Leopard, Rabbit, and Marmot in the Shey Phoksundo National Park where Shey Phoksundo Lake lies.
