Mera Peak climbing in 15 days (6476m) (Rapid Climbing)

The Mera Peak Expedition, which is situated in the Khumbu region, is one of Nepal’s most sought-after adventures, ideal for trekkers who want to experience high-altitude mountaineering without committing to a technically challenging climb. Mera Peak is at an altitude of 6,476 meters, crowning the list as the highest trekking peak in the country. It is considered one of the popular trekking peaks in the Khumbu region. Lying south of Everest, it falls into a nice location within the remote valleys of the Hinku and Hongu areas, far away from the mainstream of the crowded route leading to the Everest Base Camp. The ascent of the Mera Peak is technically not hard; however, the heavy snow and the labyrinth of crevasses can make the way longer to the summit. So, it demands enough mountaineering technical experience to scale the peak.

This expedition takes you through deep alpine forests, high mountain passes, and traditional Sherpa settlements before leading you to the icy slopes of Mera. Unlike other peaks, Mera gives climbers the rare chance to witness five of the world’s highest mountains from the summit—truly an unbeatable moment.

Approach to Mera Peak

To approach Mera peak climbing the trek starts from Kathmandu with a drive up to Jiri and a trek to Lukla at 2800m. This is a good way to begin as it helps in developing physical fitness and well acclimatization. The other way, most people fly to Lukla and start trekking through rhododendrons and pine forests. Crossing the Zatra-La pass, the trek is very steep, but the reward is a view of Cho Oyu, the world's 6th highest mountain, and the Numbur Himal.
Our base camp can be set up at 5,300m near Mera La on the Hongu side in the moraine below the ice. From her, a high camp is set at 5,800m near a rock on the Mera Glacier.

The best climbing months for Mera Peak are from March to May and again from September to November, when the weather is fairly stable for a great climb. No technical climbing experience is required to climb. But an understanding of crampons, ice axes, and ropes would be very beneficial. Our professional Sherpa guides will teach and support you along the way. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or a first-time climber aiming for something big, Mera Peak is a perfect stepping stone into the world of mountaineering.

The Mera Peak expedition's possibility of combining the routes crossing Amphu Labtsa (5,780m) and the Mingbo La (5,871m) provides some of the most adventurous trekking with spectacular scenery through remote glaciated valleys and passes.

The high camp provides us with the view of glorious panoramic views of Kanchanjunga, Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse, Amadablam, Cho Oyu, and Kangtega to the west. Everest is seen to the north over the massive unclimbed south face of Lhotse and the Nuptse/Lhotse ridge.

What to Expect During the Mera Peak Expedition.

Climbing Mera Peak is more than just a trek; it is a complete Himalayan adventure by itself. It could be a mix of leisurely trekking, cultural exploration, and high mountaineering. Starting from thick forests, the trek moves through typical Sherpa villages and climbs gradually to enter wild alpine country. Walking through wild tracks, one gets to pass through rhododendron forests, lonely valleys, and glacial moraines.

On arrival at Khare, the base of Mera Peak, glacier training and acclimatization will commence. The summit push starts early in the morning from High Camp, led by experienced Sherpa guides, using crampons, a rope, and an ice axe. The final climb is straightforward but sustained.

At the summit at 6,476m, you’ll witness a 360° view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Kanchenjunga like a huge canvas. What more—it is a total experience of physical challenge and emotional fulfillment—an ideal journey for trekking enthusiasts and budding climbers with lots of dream trips to fulfill.

Cultural Experiences on the Mera Peak Expedition

The route of Mera Peak leads you right into the heart of Sherpa territory. Unlike the more commercial trails of Everest Base Camp, this region is peaceful and authentic. Sherpa villages like Khote, Thuli Kharka, and Khare are passed before reaching the peak. People in these remote villages live very traditional lives that have been untarnished by mass tourism.

On your way, you will stumble across ancient Buddhist monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, and mani walls. Yak herders will pass you by at a slow pace, herding their livestock across steep mountain passes. Stay in family-run teahouses that will provide you with a front-row experience of each aspect of daily Sherpa life: storytelling sessions, native foods, and traditions of the Himalayas.

This cultural richness adds depth to your expedition, making it not just a physical challenge but a soul-stirring journey into one of the most spiritual regions on Earth.

Preparing to Climb Mera Peak πŸ‹οΈ

Mera Peak is a technically easy peak, but it demands really good physical conditioning, acclimatization, and endurance to make it a successful climb. It is long trek with a long hard journey every day; it ends in a final push over snow and ice with the use of mountaineering equipment.

In high-altitude trekking and especially during the Mera Peak Expedition, timing should be very much considered. If you are able to choose the right season for your trek, you can assure more pleasant views, far safer conditions, and a more enjoyable experience.

βœ… The best seasons are:

Spring (March to May)

  • Days are warm and mostly clear.
  • Excellent views of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and the giants.
  • Ideal for photography and comfortable climbing conditions.
  • The beauty of the lower trails with the colors of the Rhododendron in bloom

Autumn (September to November)

  • Post-monsoon clarity brings crystal-clear mountain views
  • Stable weather and cooler nights—perfect for high-altitude trekking
  • Popular and busy season for Himalayan climbs

❌ Less Ideal Times:

Winter (December - February): Too cold with Heavy snow at high camps

Monsoon (June to August): Wet, muddy trails and flight disruptions

πŸ—“οΈ Recommended Months:

March, April, May.

Late September, October, and early November.

During these months, the chance of getting to the summit and enjoying the whole expedition is increased. It should be noted that all of the departures are done during these peak months to ensure that you do not miss the beauty of it.

A Place to Stay on an Expedition at Mera Peak
It's highly needed to have comfort, especially when trekking in the Himalayas for more than two weeks. While this is a very remote journey, you will find a selection of nice teahouses right on the Mera Peak trail and camping facilities at high altitudes.

πŸ›Œ Accommodation at Teahouses (up to Khare – 5,045m):

Most of the nights will be in the more traditional tea houses. Basic mountain lodges are run by local families. Normally, rooms are twin shares with very basic furniture – a bed, a blanket, and a pillow. Bathrooms are shared and may be outside the main building.

Facilities Available:

  • Warm dining halls with a central fire
  • Showers run on solar power (for a small fee)
  • Solar power charging (limited)

  • Extra blankets and a serving of hot drinks

Sleeping at altitude can be challenging, but our setup maximizes warmth and safety for you. In this regard, we recommend that you bring your sleeping bag (-20°C comfort) from home or hire one in Kathmandu.

Requirement of Travel Insurance During Mera Peak Expedition

Travel insurance is a mandatory requirement for the Mera Peak Expedition. It would always seem sensible. It's a remote, high-altitude area where you would be trekking and climbing. A good insurance policy would ensure that if something went wrong, like altitude sickness, injury, flight cancellations, or other emergencies requiring a helicopter evacuation, you would be completely covered.

It must cover:

  • Emergency helicopter evacuation up to 6,500 meters.
  •  High-altitude trekking and climbing up to 6,476 meters (Mera Peak).
  •  Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Lost, damaged, or stolen luggage.
  • Medical and hospitalization expenses abroad

Please send it to us through email before coming to Nepal, including the policy with information on the emergency contact. We will take care of it and have it with us during the tour.

Your safety is our top priority. We’ll always have a first aid kit, trained guides, and a satellite phone in remote areas—but insurance is your backup lifeline in case something goes wrong.

Mera Peak (6476m) Short Climb FAQs

  • The Mera Peak Expedition is a popular trekking and climbing adventure in Nepal that takes you to the summit of Mera Peak (6,476 meters / 21,247 feet), the highest trekking peak in Nepal. It offers breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Kanchenjunga.

  • Climbing Mera Peak is considered moderately challenging. It requires basic mountaineering skills, good physical fitness, and experience trekking at high altitudes. Most of the climb involves glacier walking with the use of crampons and an ice axe.

  • The best time, of course, is in the spring months, March to May, and during the fall season, September to November. This period provides stable conditions for climbing, with a clear sky.

  • Normally, the average cost of the Mera Peak expedition ranges between $2,200 and $4,000, depending on the itinerary and services involved, the number of people in the group, or the company in charge of trekking. This cost usually includes permits, guide services, meals, lodging, and domestic flights.

  • Previous high-altitude trekking experience is preferable, though technical climbing experience is not mandatory. Most probably, some basic mountaineering training will be given, which consists of handling ropes, ice axes, and crampons.

  • To climb Mera Peak, you need three permits:

    • Mera Peak Climbing Permit
    • Makalu Barun National Park Permit
    •  Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit

Yatri Trekking will arrange all the necessary permits for you.

  • A normal trip to Mera Peak can be accomplished within 16-20 days. This will usually include a fly-in to Lukla town, acclimatization trek in and around the Hinku Valley area, sumiting, and return. Some itineraries will include a contingency day just in case the weather is bad.

  • Key gear items will be mountaineering boots, crampons and ice-axe, harness and helmet, sleeping bag (-20 degrees), down jacket, trekking poles, and a good layering system for the cold.

Your guide will provide a full Mera Peak packing list.

  • Training for the Mera Peak climb involves developing your cardio respiratory endurance, strength training, hiking with a loaded backpack, and an acclimatization hike to high altitudes. One needs to focus on building stamina and leg strength 3–6 months ahead of your expedition.

  • Mera peak is one of the safer climbing peaks in Nepal, yet there are still high-altitude risks such as Acute Mountain Sickness. Therefore, a professional guide, adequate time for acclimatization, and safety protocols should be followed for a safe expedition.
