This trek is considered ideal for those who are experienced in hiking and wish to experience a remote Himalayan culture, all while finding high passes amidst pristine natural beauty.

Nar Phu Valley Trek with Kang La Pass Overview

The Nar Phu Valley Trek with Kang La Pass is an adventurous 15-day journey into the sacred and secluded valleys of Naar and Phu, which were restricted to outsiders until 2002. Hidden between the Annapurna and Manaslu massifs, this trek offers a unique blend of raw Himalayan wilderness, ancient Tibetan culture, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes.

This trek is often referred to as the "Hidden Valley of Nepal", and for good reason. The trail, of course, remains very peaceful and authentic since few tourists have arrived here, and it is quite free from the trail of mass tourism. The journey starts from Dharapani and follows a route carved through canyons and alpine terrain, eventually crossing the impressive Kang La Pass (5,320m)—a breathtaking high pass that connects Naar with the more developed Annapurna trails.

Along the way, you’ll pass through rugged gorges, ancient Buddhist monasteries, traditional stone villages, and remote yak pastures. The people here are agro-pastoralists of Tibetan origin, preserving centuries-old customs, language, and spiritual practices.

With its stunning scenery, spiritual ambiance, and cultural richness, the Nar Phu Valley Trek is ideal for trekkers seeking a more authentic and less commercial Himalayan experience, especially those looking to escape the crowded trails of the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp.

Trek Route to Nar Phu Valley

The Nar Phu Valley Trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani, the gateway to the restricted region of Manang. From there, the path diverges from the busy Annapurna Circuit and enters a hidden world of dramatic gorges, barren landscapes, and ancient Tibetan-influenced settlements.

You'll follow the narrow gorge of the Phu Khola, gradually climbing through forests of pine trees, cascading waterfalls, and small isolated stone villages. The route passes through Koto, Meta, and Chyakhu, before ending at the magical Phu Village—one of the most secluded Himalayan settlements in Nepal.

After enough days of acclimatization and exploration around the Phu region, the trail continues to Naar village by crossing high suspension bridges and yak pastures. The real challenge in this trek is Kang La Pass, at 5,320 meters: it is a steep, high-altitude crossing that rewards trekkers with panoramic views of the Annapurna, Gangapurna, Tilicho, and Chulu peaks.

Once you cross over the pass, the trail briefly joins the Annapurna Circuit and then descends gradually by passing through Ngawal, Upper Pisang, and Besishahar, the end of the trek.

Unlike the more commercial and popular routes, this trek follows an ancient salt-trading path once used by Tibetan merchants, making it both a cultural and geographical journey stitched through the heart of Nepal's Hidden Valley.

This is the day when the real adventure begins with walking. After having some excellent breakfast in Dharapani, you would set off on an easy trek, treading through the dense, mystical pine and fir forests, providing several spectacular views of waterfalls and snow-capped cliff tops. Up the trail, rising gently by the river, one would keep an imprint on their mind about this region symbolizing peace in isolation.

The landscape becomes more alpine, the air crisper as one nears Koto. Along the trail, the first close views are of the Marsyangdi gorge. Koto is a really small village with a strong Tibetan influence and is located at the trail junction that branches off to the Nar Phu Valley from the Annapurna Circuit.

Koto is also the checkpost for Nar and Phu Valley permits. Your guide will register your documents here for the restricted area access starting tomorrow.

Today, you officially enter the Hidden Valley of Naar and Phu, a remote area that was closed to tourists until 2002. After the last permit checkpoint in Koto, you will cross the suspension bridge over the Nar Khola River, one continue up what is one of the most visually dramatic gorges in Nepal.

This stretch is long and challenging but incredibly rewarding. You’ll hike through dense pine forests, cross cascading waterfalls, and traverse narrow trails carved into rocky-walled gorges—the throat of the sacred Hidden Valley.

Gradually, the tree line fades, opening out onto high alpine terrain with some marvelous views of Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. After a full day of walking, one reaches Meta, where a few stone lodges are offering good views of the surrounding mountains.

Today's trek will take you deep into the wild and secluded heart of the Hidden Valley. After leaving Meta, the trail leads across stark and high-altitude vegetation interspersed with unique rock formations and an array of colorful Tibetan chortens and ancient maniwalls inscribed with Buddhist mantras.

The path gradually gains elevation as you pass through small seasonal settlements like Chyakhu and Kyang, which were once Khampa (Tibetan refugee) encampments. Along the way, you’ll witness awe-inspiring views of Kang Guru (6,981m) and Pokharkan peaks.

As you climb further, the valley narrows and then dramatically opens to reveal Phu Gaon, a medieval village perched atop a ridge. Isolated and largely untouched by modernity, Phu is a fascinating place where agro-pastoralist Tibetan culture still thrives. You’ll explore the cobbled alleys, traditional stone homes, and the unique lifestyle of the locals who herd yaks and harvest potatoes in this remote landscape.

Cultural Insight: The remote villages of Nar and Phu are sparsely populated by Tibetan-influenced agro-pastoralists—living testaments to a way of life closely tied to ancient Himalayan tradition.

Today is all about rest, acclimatization, and cultural immersion in the mystical village of Phu Goan. Being that you are already over 4,000 meters high today, your body will be able to adjust to the higher altitude. This adjustment will then prepare it for the ascent towards Kang La Pass.

Spend the morning exploring this ancient Tibetan village, where the lifestyle has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Narrow stone alleys, centuries-old homes, yak pastures, and traditional prayer flags fluttering in the wind paint a mesmerizing picture of authentic Himalayan life.

Another highlight of the day will be the visit to Tashi Lakhang Monastery, one of the oldest and most sacred monasteries in the region, perched just above the village. This monastery is considered one of the 108 great Buddhist monasteries of the Himalayas, and it offers sweeping views over the Phu Valley.

You'll also witness how the locals live—most are agro-pastoralists who depend on yaks and simple agriculture. It’s a rare opportunity to interact with the Tibetan-influenced culture in one of the least-visited areas of Nepal.

After the acclimatization day, today you will retrace your steps from Phu Village, descending gradually towards Chyakhu, a very remote and peaceful resting place beside a river.

Along the way, you’ll pass by the sacred Tashi Lakhang Monastery once again, a final chance to soak in its serene atmosphere and panoramic views. The descent offers a new perspective of the Hidden Valley, with vast landscapes flanked by the towering peaks of Annapurna II and Kang Guru. The surrounding terrain—marked by prayer stones, mani walls, and crumbling cliffs—is rich in the spiritual aura of the high Himalayas.

Chyakhu Manang (3,490m) used to be a seasonal herding settlement and is presently a very quiet place one can stop for overnight while heading to Nar village. This less-traveled section of the trail is perfect for absorbing the untouched wilderness of the Naar Phu region, offering solitude and natural beauty at its finest.

Following breakfast in the quiet village of Chhyakhu, you’ll begin ascending toward Nar Village, one of the most isolated and culturally rich villages in the Himalayas wilderness. The trail climbs steadily through high-altitude pastures, alpine landscapes, and ancient Buddhist chortens adorned with vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the mountain wind.

Compared to Phu, Nar is a relatively larger and more sociable, with a closely knit society of agro-pastoralists. You'll notice the distinct Tibetan-style houses, narrow stone pathways, and intricately carved mani stones throughout the village. These highland people still follow traditional Tibetan customs, growing barley, raising yaks, and practicing centuries-old spiritual rituals.

As you head for Nar, several views of Kang Guru, Pisang Peak, and various other Annapurna giants—a reward for your efforts—a great way to enjoy your achievement for the day. Arriving here quite early, you will have time to explore the Nar village, meet people, and get an insight into their lifestyle, so steeped in history and spiritualism.

This will be the most challenging and rewarding day of the trip. Today, you will trek across the very iconic Kang La Pass at 5,306 meters. This is not just the highest point of the entire trek, but it is a real milestone topographically within the breathtaking Himalaya chain.

The trek begins early, often before sunrise, to ensure you reach the top before the afternoon winds and potential weather shifts. The trail from Nar Village gradually ascends through high pastures and steep ridgelines. At higher elevations, the scenery dramatically opens up to provide sweeping views of the Annapurna and Manaslu massifs.

It’s quite a sense of accomplishment making it over Kang La Pass. The view from the top is quite fantastic; you’re treated to an unforgettable panoramic vista of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak beyond, with the vast Marsyangdi Valley below. The fluttering prayer flags at the summit mark not only the geographical divide but a spiritual threshold in your journey through the Hidden Valley of Naar Phu.

On descent from the pass, steep steps lead you to the very pretty village of Ngawal on the Upper Pisang route of the Annapurna Circuit. It is long but very scenic, with changing colors, wide meadows, and distant villages tucked away in green terraces.

With the high of conquering Kang La Pass behind you, today presents a more relaxed and scenic descent along a beautiful trail toward Upper Pisang. This place is one of the most picturesque villages encountered on the Annapurna Circuit. It meanders gently along through alpine meadows, forests of pines and junipers, and past traditional stone-built houses and monasteries adorned with fluttering prayer flags.

Ngawal to Upper Pisang is nothing but a great cultural and scenic treat. While walking along the ridge, you will face uninterrupted views of Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, and the Marsyangdi River far below. The trail also passes ancient mani walls and small chortens, giving you continued glimpses into the deeply spiritual character of this region.

Upper Pisang is a well-maintained, truly traditional village known for its ornate Buddhist monastery high above a backdrop of mountain ranges. It is an ideal place to sit back and reflect after the experience of Nar and Phu's Hidden Valley.

It will be in a private 4×4 Jeep from Upper Pisang. The drive will be very scenic and bumpy, along rough mountain roads to Besisahar, a gateway town to the Annapurna Circuit.

The off-road journey is long but incredibly scenic, descending gradually through lush green valleys, cascading waterfalls, hanging bridges, and terraced farmland dotted with Gurung and Magar villages. The dramatic shift from the arid alpine zones to the subtropical greenery of the lower hills showcases Nepal’s astonishing diversity in just a few hours.

Besisahar is a small but busy town where you’ll rest for the night before heading back to Kathmandu. It’s also a place to reflect on your trek, enjoy a hot shower, and perhaps share stories with fellow trekkers coming from various directions.

Best Season for Nar Phu Valley Trekking

Choosing the right time to trek the Nar Phu Valley with Kang La Pass is essential for the best experience. Due to its remote location, high-altitude passes, and variable weather conditions, only certain months are ideal for this adventure.

🌤️ Best Trekking Seasons:

SeasonMonthsHighlights
SpringMarch – April – MayWildflowers in bloom, clear skies, pleasant temperatures, vibrant landscapes
AutumnSeptember – October – NovemberStable weather, best mountain visibility, peak trekking season, and cultural festivals in villages

🏔 Why Spring and Autumn?

  • During spring, every turn along the route is covered with blooming rhododendron and colorful alpine flora. The temperatures are moderate, and the skies are clear most of the time.
  • Autumn offers the clearest mountain views and dry trails. This is the most popular time for crossing Kang La Pass (5,306m) safely.
  • These seasons also provide the best conditions for photography, exploring remote Tibetan-influenced villages, and enjoying a smoother trekking experience.

⚠️ Seasons to Avoid:

  • Monsoon (June–August): Trails get muddy, and there is a high chance that they will be slippery. Landslides are common.
  • Winter (December–February): Heavy snowfall can block the Kang La Pass, making it dangerous or impossible to cross.

✅ For a safer, more scenic, and enjoyable trek, we recommend booking during spring or autumn. Yatri Trekking ensures the best local guides, updated weather monitoring, and flexible planning.
