Dolpo: The complete epic trek of Upper & Lower Dolpo circuit

The Upper Dolpo circuit is comprehensive, encompassing the entire Dolpo region, including the Kangla Pass (5500m) and Gela Pass (5100m), as well as the second-largest villages in Saldang and Shey Gomba

Dolpo region, that culturally and naturally resembles the Mustang region, lies in the direct route between Tibet and Nepal, where we cross the caravans of yaks carrying salt and wool from Tibet. It makes any trekkers feel the lifestyle of mountainous region. It offers a highly adventurous journey where you get to feel the rhythm of chörtens, Buddhist prayer spots and watching Blue Sheep, Snow Leopard, Rabbit and Marmot in the Shey Phoksundo National Park where Shey Phoksundo Lake lies.

In the afternoon, there is a 1-hour flight to reach the Far-West of Nepal, Nepalgunj. The journey is quite remarkable, crossing the entire length of the Nepal Himalayas west of Kathmandu, offering superb views of Langtang, Manaslu, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri. Nepalgunj is situated close to the Indian border and is notably warmer in comparison to Kathmandu.
Day 04: Nepalgunj - Juphal (2400m), 45 minutes by plane- Dunai (2135m), 3hrs & O/N in camp.
Today, we will take a flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. Upon arrival, we will meet our crew and commence the trek from the Juphal airstrip towards Dunai. After walking for three hours, we will reach Dunai, the headquarters of the Dolpa district. Our camp will be set up near the village, along the banks of the Bheri River.

Today, we will take a flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. Upon arrival, we will meet our crew and commence the trek from the Juphal airstrip towards Dunai. After walking for three hours, we will reach Dunai, the headquarters of the Dolpa district. Our camp will be set up near the village, along the banks of the Bheri River.

The trek begins from Dunai, following a path along the Thulu Bheri River with a gradual descent to the confluence of Suligard and Thuli Bheri rivers. From there, we follow Sulighat Khola until we reach Phoksundi Lake. As we ascend to a higher elevation, we traverse through rhododendron and bamboo forests. Our journey ultimately brings us to Chapke, where we will set up our camp.

Today, we start our journey along the ascending path towards Sumdo. As we traverse this picturesque route, we find ourselves immersed in the enchanting beauty of thick pine forests and bamboo groves—typifying the altitude vegetation of this region. This diverse landscape offers a unique opportunity to encounter various wild animals, adding an element of excitement and wonder to our trekking experience. We proceed with the ascent along the mountain side, marveling at the lush greenery of coniferous forests and the presence of juniper trees. Along the way, we are treated to the sight of a large waterfall cascading from the Phoksundo lake. Continuing our trek, we eventually reach Phoksundo Lake. The lake leaves a lasting impression with its stunningly graceful blue color and the vibrant hues of the surrounding cliffs, creating a truly awe-inspiring scene.

Initially, the trail traverses along the rocky cliff, featuring relatively easy ascents and descents along the shores of Shey Phoksundo Lake. Upon completing this section, as the lake reaches its conclusion, the trail transitions into an uncomplicated path leading towards Sallaghari. Here, amidst the forested surroundings, we will establish our camp.

Today, we follow a straight path along the riverbank. Subsequently, halfway through, the ascent path commences. Continuing along this ascending route, we eventually reach the base camp.

Today, our journey towards Shey Gumba, we will visit the Chakang Gomba in the evening. Our route involves crossing Kangla Pass at an altitude of 5500m. After descending from the pass, we proceed along a straight path, eventually reaching Shey Gomba. Here, we explore the gomba and one of the significant villages, Shey, in this region. Our camp is set up within the village.

As we delve into the exploration of Shey Gomba, we are captivated by the monastery, an architectural marvel nestled within the natural contours of a cave. The Shey Monastery stands in close proximity to the gently flowing river, offering not only a spiritual retreat but also a vantage point to behold the picturesque surroundings. Positioned along the riverbanks, the monastery provides a panoramic view of the landscape, a reflection of times long past. The scene unraveled from the river unveils the ancient beauty of the area, showcasing a timeless tableau that transports us to a bygone era. The serene ambiance of the monastery and its scenic location by the river contribute to a profound and contemplative experience, inviting us to connect with the rich history and natural allure of Shey Gomba.

We begin our trek from Shey Gomba, making our way towards Namgung Gumba. The path presents a relatively easy ascent, with occasional narrow sections giving way to wider stretches. Crossing the Gela La pass at an altitude of 5100m, we then descend towards Namgung Gomba. Along the way, we explore the intriguing Chamthang Cave before continuing our descent towards Saldang. The path eases into a straightforward descent, leading us to the prominent Saldang village. Here, we take the opportunity to visit the Saldang Monastery and explore the village, renowned as one of the largest inhabited settlements in upper Dolpo.

We start our trek on a descent path, walking for approximately 3 hours until we reach Tribeni. Along the riverbank, we pause for lunch and establish our camp. Post-lunch, the group visits Yangser Monastery. Upon completing the monastery visit, we return to our camp at Tribeni. Notably, there is a small village adjacent to the monastery and situated above our campsite.

The trail takes us on an ascent along the riverbank, offering a relatively straightforward path towards the quaint village of Cha. As we ascend, the landscape unfolds, revealing picturesque hillsides where sheep and yak peacefully graze in expansive pasturelands. The pastoral scenery, with its grazing animals and undulating terrain, adds to the tranquil ambiance of the journey. The gentle ascent provides an opportunity to appreciate not only the natural beauty but also the harmonious coexistence between the local flora, fauna, and the communities along the way.

 During the initial hour of the trek, we trace the path along the riverbank, encountering 2/3 river crossings. It's crucial to note that a bit further, at a specific river junction, we must cross it. Despite the appearance of the right trail being the apparent route, we should follow the left trail. Continuing along this left trail, we proceed on a gradual ascent towards Yak Kharka, where we establish our camp. The campsite offers breathtaking views of the waterfall and the surrounding scenery of Yak Kharka.

The path begins with an ascent, and we traverse the Chang La pass at an elevation of 5300m. Following the pass crossing, we embark on a descent that spans approximately 3 hours, leading us to Deurali. From Deurali, the trail straightens as we make our way towards Dho.

Dho Tarap village is situated in an area where the inhabitants practice the pre-Buddhist religion known as "Bon Po." This unique cultural and religious heritage adds a distinct flavor to the ambiance of Dho Tarap, making it a noteworthy destination on our journey.

Today, we continue our journey by following the trail along the Dho Khola. The path leads us through a mineral rocky terrain, providing a unique and rugged backdrop to our trek. As we gradually descend to lower altitudes, a lush panorama of coniferous and juniper trees unfolds, painting the landscape with shades of green. The transition in vegetation becomes evident, creating a captivating spectacle as we traverse the trail. Further descending into the terrain, we encounter expansive pine forests, adding a rich tapestry of colors and textures to our surroundings. This descent not only showcases the diverse flora of the region but also offers a visually stunning and immersive experience for trekkers.

We continue along the descending path, tracing the flank of the rocky mountain. Here, the landscape transforms, revealing a lush expanse of pine forests. The surroundings take on a serene and isolated quality, devoid of any village visits along the way. The journey unfolds amidst the quiet beauty of nature, with the open greenery of the pine forests creating a tranquil and undisturbed atmosphere.

Today, we start our journey on a descending path, occasionally navigating a straight trail along the riverbank. Throughout the day, our route remains parallel to the river, guiding us steadily towards Tarakot. Upon reaching our destination, we establish our camp near a police beat, with a clear view of the Tarakot village situated above our campsite.

We leave Tarakot on the straight path easy walk along the Bheri River. Today we cross the 3 suspension bridges on the way. We reach Dunai, the head quarter of Dolpa, we continue towards Juphal Airport, the path is wide and straight.  At the end of our trek we climb before we arrive Juphal.

Early morning the spectacular flight down to Nepalgunj through the Himalaya range above us as and followed and onward to Kathmandu.
