Nar Phu (Hidden Valley) Trek combined with Annapurna Kang La Pass (5,350 m) – Tilicho lake

The Nar Phu Valley Trek with a glimpse of Tilicho via Kang La Pass (5350m) is an adventurous journey into the sacred and secluded valleys of Nar and Phu, which were restricted to outsiders until 2002. Hidden between the Annapurna and Manaslu massifs, this trek offers a unique blend of raw Himalayan wilderness, ancient Tibetan culture, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes.

This trek is often referred to as the "Hidden Valley of Nepal", and for good reason. The trail, of course, remains very peaceful and authentic since few tourists have arrived here, and it is quite free from the trail of mass tourism. The journey starts from Dharapani and follows a route carved through canyons and alpine terrain, eventually crossing the impressive Kang La Pass (5,320m)a breathtaking high pass that connects Naar with the more developed Annapurna trails. Along the way, you’ll pass through rugged gorges, ancient Buddhist monasteries, traditional
stone villages, and remote yak pastures. The people here are agro-pastoralists of Tibetan origin, preserving centuries-old customs, language, and spiritual practices.

With its stunning scenery, spiritual ambiance, and cultural richness, the Nar Phu Valley Trek is ideal for trekkers seeking a more authentic and less commercial Himalayan experience, especially those looking to escape the crowded trails of the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp.

The itinerary sticks together Annapurna Classic Circuit at Ngawal village, a picturesque settlement that offers stunning views of the Annapurna range. From here, the trail gradually leads you towards the beautiful village of Manang, following the well-trodden paths of the Annapurna Circuit. Manang, with its rich Tibetan culture, breathtaking landscapes, and dramatic mountain backdrops, is a perfect place to rest and experience the charm of high Himalayan life.
The Nar Phu Gorge

Leaving Manang, the trek diverges from the main classic circuit trail once again and ventures towards the pristine Tilicho Lake. On the way, you pass through Khangsar, the last inhabited village before the lake, where traditional stone houses and fluttering prayer flags mark the resilience of life at such high altitude. The trail climbs steadily to reach Tilicho Lake, situated at an altitude of 4,919 meters. Known as one of the highest lakes in the world, Tilicho is surrounded by towering snow peaks, and its turquoise waters create a truly magical and serene atmosphere.

After exploring the tranquil beauty of Tilicho Lake, the adventure itinerary return back to link the Annapurna classic circuit at Yak Kharka then continues towards famous Thorang la pass ( 5416m) Crossing this high pass rewards trekkers with panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, before making the descent into the Kali Gandaki Valley. The trek then leads down to Muktinath – Jomsom, windswept landscapes, and as a gateway to the Mustang region

Today is the longest and hardest journey of the trek. The trail is quite steep between Thorong Phedi and Thorong High Camp. It's suggested to start early in the morning, around 4 am, in order to avoid the gusty winds that come up later in the day. While you climb, it will often seem like the pass is just behind the next ridge, only to find another ridge or moraine in the distance. When you finally reach the pass, you are rewarded with fantastic views in all directions. Don’t overlook the difficulty of getting down to Muktinath, which involves a fairly steep descent of about 1500m. In front of you are views of the Mustang Region and Dhaulagiri Mountain. You will certainly be tired from the long journey and the altitude, but you will forget this upon arrival in Muktinath.

You will visit the sacred Hindu temple, built in the early 19th century, dedicated to Vishnu and named Muktinath, Muktikshetra (place of liberation) is both religious symbiosis for Hindus and Buddhists devotees. The natural eternal flame inside the Gompa can be witness. The Muktinath temple is one of the most ancient temples of Lord Vishnu. The statue of the Muktinath temple Vishnu is enormous, made up of real gold, and is often compared with a tall man. The outer courtyard, known as the Parokrama, 108 sacred water flows through these bull-faced fountains. Pilgrims believe that bathing in the water from these 108 sacred fountains purifies their lives.
